In 2005, I was given my first digital camera - It was a small Olympus camera, but it was all that I needed in order to learn the basics of exposure and composition. The fact that I could get instant feedback from my images, coupled with a growing passion for the art led me to progress quickly.
Towards the end of 2005 I entered my first competition. To my surprise, I became the winner of the 15-17 year old category in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition with my chimpanzee image. This early success boosted my confidence and gave me the necessary encouragement to improve my photography.
As my abilities developed, I began to focus on nature and wildlife photography. I have always been fascinated with wildlife and it was only natural that I incorporated this interest with photography. However, when shooting wildlife subjects, I soon became limited by the short focal length of my camera and realized the advantage of versatility that an SLR system offered. At this stage, my brother was already using canon equipment so it was sensible that I followed suit.
I find that for me, photography is a means not only to record interesting events but also a way to capture and reflect on the beauty of the natural world that is often missed by the eye. So, when I take a photograph, I always look to include one or more of three components: beauty, behaviour and environment.
